Barbara Herrnstein Smith - Dis/Integration: On the New Interdisciplinarity

A critique of the "third culture" drift in the Humanities, of E. O. Wilson's ideal of consilience or the unification of knowledge, and a defense of the traditional role of the humanities as distinct from pragmatic sciencific approaches. Variety of methods and approaches in the humanities, and their subjectivism, is not a sign of aimlessness, but of effectiveness in different contexts and for different people.

"Exploring and seeking to convey human experience is fundamentally different from observing, describiing, and seeking to explain human behavior."

The humanities are subjectivist and partisan, not objectivist and impartial.
